Amsoil Inc. was five years old when I was introduced to this new concept of synthetic oil. I remember saying to myself, “Is this stuff ‘Plastic’ oil’? I was fascinated from the start. I will admit, I became excited about the opportunity of being a part of a new industry. I was living in Tulsa Oklahoma heart of the “Oil Patch” , “How appropriate!”
There were only 11 products then and the oil was in a very smart looking metal can. This was in those days when all the major oil companies were using cardboard cans and many times those things would leak. And what a mess! This award winning can was certainly appropriate for a new product like Amsoil.
I was very much impressed by the chart that appeared on the back of the Amsoil 10W-40 oil can. The chart compared the properties of Amsoil to petroleum oil. That chart helped me sell this revolutionary new product like nothing else.
In those early years of Amsoil history, we were the very first to introduce Amsoil to Tulsa Oklahoma at the 1977 Tulsa State Fair. Many were very receptive of these products but there were those who almost wanted to fight the very idea of synthetic oil. Some would make unkind remarks and want to argue.
But today it is an all new ball game. The debate over the value of synthetics is all but over and as you might guess. Synthetics are the emphasis of all the major oil companies. “Imitation is the truest form of flattery and we do appreciate it.” Amsoil was the “First In Synthetics” and we are still the best.
I have always used Amsoil to the furthurest extent of the warrantee. I have used it in every vehicle I have ever owned since 1977. And I have never had an oil related problem.
Now, in the new millennium there are many synthetics on the market. The Mobil /Castrol controversary, resulted in a much broadening of the definition of a ” synthetic.” This has opened the floodgate for a raft of group III, hydro cracked products from the majority of the oil producers. They all call their products 100% synthetic yet the purist knows that if it’s not a PAO base stock it’s not of the highest quality.
There is a growing place in the market place for these hydro cracked products, although as the bar keeps rising they will never measure up to the PAO based “True Synthetics.”
